She was 17 when she was spotted by a representative of independent label Big Yellow Dog Records who began shopping her songs to labels and artists. Decker was signed to a contract by Island/Def Jam after Mercury Records' president David Massey passed her demos to L.A. Reid, head of Island/Def Jam. At the end of August, 2009 Decker released her first self-titled album under the moniker Jessie James. Jessie James had a moderately success debut album. Wanted, a song of the album, reached the Top 40 singles chart. But while Decker was always an artist from the country genre, The album was recorded and promoted with a pop audience at heart. Decker's second album, which was announced by the title Daughter of a Gypsy and Sweet American Dreams by Mercury Records was shelved following Mercury discovered the lack of success of three singles from Decker on the charts of country radio.
